Associate Professor, Department of Pathology, American University of Beirut, Lebanon
Riyad El-Khoury, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the American University of Beirut (AUB). He serves as the Head of the Muhieddine Al-Ahdab Neuromuscular Diagnostic Laboratory, where he leads specialized diagnostic services for nerve and muscle disorders. Dr. El-Khoury holds a PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Genomics from Paris-Sud University and completed his postdoctoral fellowship in mitochondrial medicine at the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM) in Paris.
His clinical expertise is centered on the integration of morphological, biochemical, and molecular findings to diagnose neuromuscular diseases. He is a prominent advocate for digital pathology and has been instrumental in transitioning AUB’s pathology services to digital workflows, including the implementation of artificial intelligence tools for diagnostic support. His research interests include the study of mitochondrial dysfunction and the molecular pathways involved in neuroinflammation and muscle atrophy.
Beyond his institutional roles, Dr. El-Khoury is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and is active in the international scientific community. He chairs the “Featured Case” section for the World Muscle Society and holds a University Diploma in Artificial Intelligence in Pathology from the University of Paris. In 2025, he was elected to the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society in recognition of his contributions to the fields of genetics and pathology.
