Shane C. Quinonez, MD, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the departments of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. He is a board-certified clinical geneticist who serves in several key leadership capacities, including Service Chief of Pediatric Genetics and Interim Director of Global REACH, the medical school’s international global health program. His clinical practice at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital focuses on diagnosing and managing complex genetic conditions, particularly inborn errors of metabolism and cases identified through newborn screening.Â
In addition to his clinical roles, Dr. Quinonez is the Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Residency Program and Co-Director of the Michigan Medical Genetics Laboratory. His research and global health initiatives are dedicated to expanding medical genetic services in low- and middle-income countries through technical solutions and innovative care delivery systems. He has spearheaded multiple international projects, including implementing newborn screening programs in Nepal, establishing genetic counseling services in Ethiopia, and piloting mobile health applications to enhance diagnostics in Ghana. As of 2025, he continues to lead global collaborations that aim to bridge health equity gaps and build long-term diagnostic capacity in resource-limited settings.
