Chair, Department of Pathology, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana
Ernest Kwasi Adjei, MD, FRCPath, is a distinguished Consultant Anatomic Pathologist and the Head of the Laboratory Services Directorate at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Ghana. He is recognized for his leadership in transforming KATH’s pathology department from a service primarily focused on autopsies into a comprehensive diagnostic center offering surgical pathology, cytopathology, and immunohistochemistry. Dr. Adjei earned his medical degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and completed specialized training in Norway before becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists.Â
In addition to his clinical roles, he is an active academic researcher with a significant focus on breast cancer, particularly its genetic and etiological factors in women of African ancestry. As of 2025, his work continues to bridge the gap between scientific research and patient care through collaborative initiatives like the City Cancer Challenge network. Dr. Adjei is also a public advocate for the pathology profession in Ghana, frequently highlighting the critical role pathologists play in diagnosing live patients to counteract the misconception that their work is limited to mortuaries.Â
