Deo Ruhangaza, MD, MMed, is a specialist in anatomical pathology who currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Pathology at the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in Rwanda. He is also the Head of the Department of Pathology at Butaro Level Two Teaching Hospital, a facility recognized as a center of excellence for cancer care in the region. His professional work is deeply integrated with the Rwandan Ministry of Health and the non-governmental organization Partners In Health/Inshuti Mu Buzima.Â
Dr. Ruhangaza specializes in oncopathology, with a specific focus on expanding diagnostic access in low-resource settings. His research and clinical practice involve the use of advanced diagnostic tools, such as digital pathology and GeneXpert molecular assays, to improve the detection and management of cancers including breast, gastric, and colorectal malignancies. He has published on topics ranging from the histological characteristics of breast cancer in Rwandan patients to the implementation of cost-effective pathology services in sub-Saharan Africa. Through his role at UGHE, he is actively involved in training the next generation of Rwandan health professionals in the mechanisms of disease and clinical pathology.Â
