Dr. Lauren Smith received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan (AB, Honors College, 1992). She spent time working in research at the University of California, San Francisco and Columbia University before returning to Ann Arbor for medical school (MD, 2002). She completed her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP) and her fellowship in hematopathology (2002-2007).
Dr. Smith began her career in the Department of Pathology in 2007 as an assistant professor on the clinical track. She was promoted to associate professor in 2013 and full professor in 2018. She served as the fellowship director for hematopathology from 2013-2022 and the section head from 2015-2022.
In addition to pathology, Dr. Smith is a clinical ethicist who began working on the adult ethics committee on the consult service in 2005. She was selected as a formal Clinical Ethicist for Michigan Medicine in 2016 and has served in that role since that time. She also helped create and served as the director of the Ethics Path of Excellence in the Medical School from 2013-2025.
She has been actively involved in faculty governance at the University of Michigan. She was elected to the Senate Assembly in 2025 and SACUA in 2026. She serves on the Medical Affairs Advisory Committee (MAAC) and the Committee on the Oversight of Administrative Action (COAA).
