Vice President & Global Medical Director, ICON Clinical Laboratories
Timothy Amukele, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist and leader in clinical pathology who serves as the Vice President and Global Laboratory Medical Director at ICON plc, a global provider of drug development and commercialization services. He also holds an appointment as a Voluntary Research Professor in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Amukele is internationally recognized for his pioneering research on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, to transport laboratory specimens, demonstrating that biological samples can be flown long distances without compromising their diagnostic integrity.
Prior to his transition to the private sector, Dr. Amukele was an Associate Professor of Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he directed the clinical laboratories at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. His work has significantly impacted global health, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where he served as the medical director for the Makerere University-Johns Hopkins University Core Lab in Uganda. He has also been a consultant for the World Health Organization, contributing to the development of the Essential Diagnostics List.
Dr. Amukele is the President of Pathologists Overseas, a non-profit organization dedicated to building sustainable laboratory capacity in resource-limited settings. He earned his medical degree and a PhD in immunology from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship training at the University of Washington. In 2025, he continues to bridge the gap between clinical research and global health equity, focusing on improving diagnostic access through technological innovation and international collaboration.
